HOUMA, La. – Okeanus Science and Technology, LLC (Okeanus) is pleased to announce the addition of the Sonardyne Ranger 2 GyroUSBL (GyroUSBL) system to its fleet of oceanographic and marine scientific and research equipment. The GyroUSBL is used for acoustic positioning of underwater equipment by providing a highly precise, real-world geographic coordinate position from below the surface.

The GyroUSBL is designed for high-precision target tracking to a range of 4,000 m, as well as for dynamically positioned (DP) vessels. Due to its built-in gyro, the USBL can be quickly and readily deployed without the need for post-installation calibration, providing significant savings in time and operational costs. The integrated Lodestar Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS)/Inertial Navigation System (INS) provides precise recording of all motion and acoustic data, heightening positioning accuracy and effectively removing many sources of error associated with standard USBL systems.

The highly portable GyroUSBL can be installed on nearly any size vessel and provides value across such subsea platforms as installation, target tracking and surveying. New 6G acoustic communication eliminates on-deck downtime by enabling the acoustic reconfiguration of beacon settings; 4,000m and 1,000m omni-directional beacons are available. The recent acquisition of the GyroUSBL is a testament to Okeanus’ reputation as a premier provider of specialized, state-of-the-art subsea rental equipment solutions across numerous applications.

Okeanus Announces Hire of New Vice President and General Manager

As a facilitator of both strategic and organic growth, LeBlanc will be responsible for day-to-day operations of Okeanus, expansion into international markets, and management of the firm’s customer base.

Okeanus Takes Delivery of Deepwater Box Cores

Custom-designed, deepwater box cores available for lease through Okeanus

Okeanus Science and Technology LLC (Okeanus) is pleased to announce the addition of custom-designed, deepwater box cores to its catalog of equipment available for lease. As part of its suite of equipment, Okeanus offers clients a variety of box cores sizes. The most recent additions to Okeanus’ box core line are the largest class offered for leasing and have openings measuring 50 cm x 50 cm with a depth of approximately 60 cm. Fully laden by weights, the new box core design weighs nearly 1,200 lbs. The design of this box core allows single increments of up to 20, 35-lb weights to be easily added or removed from the frame. This ability to adjust the weights helps manage the penetration depth of the box core and increases the chance of obtaining an acceptable box core sample in a variety of sediment densities.

By combining a box core and a winch spooled with synthetic line, Okeanus can provide clients with a superior deepwater sediment sampling package. The addition of an Ultra Short Baseline System (USBL) and navigation package allows for exact geographic recording of where the box core makes contact with the seafloor and may be used to steer the box core to a preselected location. For biological sampling efforts, Okeanus carries custom-designed infaunal sieving stations that greatly cut down on the time required to process a sample.
